What Are Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses are artificial lenses applied to the front surface of the eye, used to correct refractive errors, improve peripheral vision, offer cosmetic enhancement, and provide therapeutic benefits for various eye conditions.

Why Are Contact Lenses Used?

  • Convenience: They can be worn with non-prescription sunglasses and are suitable for various environments without hassle.
  • Specialized Uses: Some lenses can treat specific eye conditions or provide therapeutic benefits, such as protecting healing corneas.

Types of Contact Lenses

  • Soft Contact Lenses: Made of soft, flexible material, these lenses are easier to adjust to and provide better initial comfort. They include soft toric lenses for astigmatism and cosmetic lenses to enhance or change eye color.
  • Multifocal Contact Lenses: These correct presbyopia, providing clear vision at all distances and eliminating the need for reading glasses.
  • Rigid Contact Lenses: More durable than soft lenses, they resist deposit buildup, last longer, and help correct high corneal astigmatism and irregularities.
  • Scleral Contact Lenses: These arch over the cornea, creating a uniform optical surface to correct high corneal astigmatism and manage conditions like severe dry eye disease.

Care Guidelines

Do's:

  • Always wash your hands before handling your lenses.
  • Check each lens for damage before insertion.
  • Clean each lens daily by rubbing for 10 seconds on each side and then rinsing.
  • Use only the solution recommended by the doctor.
  • Replace your lenses on time.
  • Change the solution daily.
  • Keep your storage case clean and replace it every 3 months.

Don'ts:

  • Do not sleep in your lenses unless approved by the doctor.
  • Do not swim or use the hot tub in your lenses.
  • Never use tap water on your lenses.
  • Do not use medicated drops with your contacts, unless approved by your eye doctor.

Follow-Up Appointments

Follow-up appointments are necessary to ensure:

  • The contact lenses are fitting and moving well
  • The prescription is providing the best possible vision
  • The eyes are remaining healthy
  • There are no problems with insertion or removal
  • You understand and comply with the recommended wearing schedule and lens care regimen
